The Day I Became a Woman – Thank You Sophia Webster

Dear Sophia,

I have never been the kind of girl who had a closet full of shoes, an obsession with top shoe designers and willing to pay the high price tag for them. I assumed all those nice ones were probably uncomfortable anyway so why bother. Plus, I’m super frugal and only buy things I truly love. Just to clue you in, I’ve been wearing the same pair of sneakers for six years and my wedding shoes costed less than $60. But that would soon change.

One morning while going to work I was standing at the platform at the subway. I looked down at the ground towards the well dressed girl to my left…and saw the most beautiful shoes! Butterfly wings on her feet gilded in embroidered threads of rose gold. How wondrous, I thought. I have never been so enamored and distracted by a pair of shoes before. As soon as I made it into work, I Googled “butterfly wing flats” and your shoes came up. Boy, were they pricey…but I had to have them! I have never had to have a pair of shoes before in my life.

There’s something so feminine, so fairy-tale, yet classy about the wings. As if every step in those shoes would be a float, gliding across the ground. I was in love, I knew that I had every right to get those shoes. Picking out my European size on your website was the hardest part. I don’t know anything about EU sizes and my shoe size usually varies between 5.5 and 6. But, I went with my gut and ordered 36.5. I prayed the night after I ordered them, I hope they fit. I hope they fit!
In less than two days, my package was here. I put on some girly mood background music, washed my hands and carefully opened the box. Ooo it came with a Pink bag to store them in. And oh my! I must keep the sticks and shaped tissue in them so they keep their shape when I’m not wearing them. Haha, this is so unlike me, since I usually just throw my shoes at the bottom of my closet. Best of all, they fit! Holy crap it’s a miracle they fit.
Sophia, these shoes were different, they have changed me. I now walk with a new found confidence I never had before. I actually own a suede brush so that I can clean them (this took some research). I tread carefully so I don’t mess them up, but I smile every time I look down. When someone compliments me on them, I do a little clink of the toes to put the wings together to reveal the butterfly.
It may sound strange, being that I am already 32 years old, but I actually feel like a full blown woman now. I have even finally found my signature style that I had been searching for all these years. The butterfly, that’s me now. Flowy, lacey, whimsical butterfly. A style that speaks to my soul.

And so, I thank you. I’m saving up to get a pair of your embroidered floral boots and even though these are pricey pieces, I know that I will have years of happiness with them and take very special care to make them last me for a long time to come.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

With a hug and gratitude,

Candice

Some Times

Sometimes you’ll be teacher’s pet,

Sometimes you’ll be nothing at all.

Sometimes you can change their minds,

Sometimes they won’t consider you at all.

And in those times,

The lonely times,

there ain’t nothing you can do.

Sometimes they’ll fall like lonely feathers,

Atop a shore of rocks.

And like the few times you’ll find them by your feet,

Those times will act as blocks.

But the best part about sometimes,

Is that it’s not forever,

And not all the time.

So you can always count on the other times,

The ones where you’ll mean something.

All we can hope for,

All we can try to do.

We can try to make the good times all the time,

And hope for the sometimes to be fair and few.

Dear Mr. Roger Waters

Dear Mr. Roger Waters,

I was once told that some concerts you go to, the headlining bands will twist their music in a “new” way. Playing their hit songs with a little change of tempo or wording, so that they feel updated. I was glad to experience that your concerts are not at all this way. The two times I saw you in New Jersey, the songs sounded exactly the same, as if I had closed my eyes and put the record on. They sounded exactly the same beautiful way as they did when I heard them for the very first time. That’s how I want them to stay.

But I am not writing to tell you how big of a fan I am. I am writing to tell you the story of how your music and your voice has become magical to my life. When I was about sixteen years old, I rummaged through the attic in my dad’s old cassette tape collection. I picked up your tape of “Wish you Were Here” and new nothing about the songs, but was enamored by the cover art. The burning man….how interesting. I started listening to it and enjoyed all the songs. And later, told my mom how much I liked Pink Floyd and she told me, that was my dad’s favorite band. It filled my heart to know that even though my dad was in heaven, we were so far away, he had died when I was five –yet we both loved the same music.

As I grew up and years went by, life seemed to get more stressful with crappy boyfriends, crappy jobs, and all that silly crap you make a big fuss over when growing up. But you know what? Something magical kept happening.

The first time it happened, I had left the house of a real jerk I had been dating – he was nice when we were alone but when his friends would come over he’d become mean, disrespectful, and made fun of me. I got fed up that night, so I walked out, got in my car and started driving home. As I drove, I said out loud, “Dad, can you please help me? I don’t want to like this guy anymore. It’s so hard not to, but can you please help me to not like him anymore?”. Then, a Pink Floyd song came on the radio. I never saw or felt that I needed to talk to that boy ever again.

One job I hated so much because the environment was so toxic. I used to dread going to work and sometimes I would say out loud to my dad to help me. Then, like clockwork – a Pink Floyd song came on the radio.

Before my dad died, he once told me that if I missed him, to just look at the moon and he’d be looking at it too. Then it wouldn’t seem like we were so far away. Back then, in my late teens and early twenties – whenever I was driving in my car and missed him or needed him or felt sad – I looked up at the moon, to the empty passenger seat next to me – and then, always again, a Pink Floyd song would come on the radio.

Every time those songs came on I felt a rush of relief, a calmness, a faint touch in my heart reminding me that I would be ok. That my dad was with me.

Sure, you could say it’s just coincidence. After all, I was always listening to the same classic rock radio station. But, when it became over fifty times, then over a hundred times, then almost every time I needed him – those Pink Floyd songs came on and still do to this day. It can’t be a coincidence. It may sound ridiculous – but when you have experienced and felt the way I have – there’s no one who could ever make me believe it’s not real. I don’t know how and I don’t need to know how, but I do know that my father speaks to me through your music. I am so grateful to have found such a special connection with him. A way we can connect to each other.

Your two concerts I attended were very packed, but the seat next me (both times) was empty. He was at those concerts with me. I know he wouldn’t want to miss them for the world.

Thank you.

With love and gratitude,

Daughter of Louis J. Pepe, December 27, 1965 – March 15, 1991

I mailed this letter today to the only mailing address I could find for Roger Waters management in the UK. I don’t want anything in return, all I want is for him to read my letter. I also enclosed a picture of me and my dad and mom together from Easter Sunday, April 1987.

And thanks to you, whoever is reading now. As long as there is magic in the world, we all have hope.

Poetic Power Breakfast

The softness of the avocado,
Mixes with a crunch,
Heavenly sauteed green bell peppers,
Garnish a micro bunch.
The eggs are fluffy and full of cheesy ahhh.
My taste buds are on a bike ride
While my tummy is at the spa.

image

Just like art,  fashion and life – food is poetic too. The poem above was inspired by this low-carb breakfast dish that’s easy to make and oh so good for you. I’m currently on a low carb diet and trying new ways to make healthy food that tastes good. I’m not the type who can eat a whole bowl full of vegetables… Unless you throw some cheese and bacon in there!! Haha. Hope you get to try out the recipe or it inspires you to do a twist of your own.

Scrambled Eggs with Tie Dyed Greens

image

Ingredients:
2 eggs
Half an avocado sliced
1/4 cup of chopped green bell pepper
1 tablespoon of butter
1/3 cup of rinsed micro greens
3/4 cup of shredded mozzerella cheese
Salt and pepper

image

First sautee the bell peppers and micro greens in melted butter. After about 5 minutes, remove them from the pan and place on a dish. Then crack your two eggs in the same hot pan and prepare them how you like. I made mine scrambled. Sprinkle some salt and pepper on them for flavor.

image

When the eggs are fully cooked, add in your bell peppers, micro greens in with the eggs. Then sprinkle the cheese on top. Cook till the cheese is melted.

Then put it all on a plate. Add sliced avocado on the side. Then enjoy!

Fashion Trend Poetry Reading for April 2016

Brooches and buttons in size so extreme,
Bell sleeves open up like a calla lily in a dream.
A solid chunk heel will get you going,
While friends who wear fringe
Are surely worth knowing.
You may even find yourself in conversation that’s lesser,
As short word phrases become an encrypted letter.

That was the poetic breakdown,  now for the translation.

1. Pins
Ken Downing, fashion director of Neiman Marcus, recently shared in an interview the new craze of pin proportions this season. It involves clusters of different fun shapes and sizes, not merely just one. The trick is to group them together. You can even cleverly pin them in your hair or clip them on chains as necklace pendants. Get creative and turn charms into pins by hooking and clipping them through safety pins!

Pins are a way to wear your heart on your sleeve or bib, so go for objects of your affection – whether it be dragonflies,  stars,  abstract collages,  flowers or even a tiger!

2. Bell Sleeves
The 60’s hippie culture is back… Just think, “would I wear this to woodstock or coachella? ” If yes, then you are oh so trendy girl! You can make a big statement with a peasant dress with bell sleeves or go more subtle modernized with a sleek and solid color blouse with bell sleeves. Either way, you can totally pull it off. What I like about this trend is that its loose and gives a body slimming effect.

It’s been trending ever since last fall, and it’s still going strong. Fringe looks hot paired with suede and on shoes and bags. With the weather warming up, it’s a great time to get a fringe pair of sandals.

5. VC
I’m in my early thirties so I’m not too blended with the younger generation’s evolving trendy lingo. But recently, at a Forever 21 fitting room, a girl kept saying to her friend “that dress is so vc”. She then was like ” yea, very cute”. I am sooo inclined to make up my own. Like OGDIRHTWT or MFH… I must be getting old.

VC: very cute
SS: so sexy
OGDIRHTWT: oh god do I really have to work today
MFH: my feet hurt

Washed Away – A Pastel Dip in the Ocean

image

Image cred: http://lizplummer.com/blog/category/natural-dyes/

Waves crash at my feet, as the ocean floats in,

Wash, wash me away.

As the sand against my back molds and sinks into my skin.

Wash, wash me away.

Precious eyes staring into the sun,

Till pastel colors fade and blend into one.

Then suddenly I see a blanket unfold over the sky.

Birds of golden yellow and denim blues fly by.

Chirping sounds from far, far away,

Into my dreams,

Wash, wash me away.

Admiring Her Wrinkles

image

I am jealous of her wrinkles,
Stories hidden in the crinkles.
Where she’s been,
How she got there.
The shoes she walked in.
How she wore her hair.
All the colors she dyed.
All the new things she tried.
I don’t know why.
but it’s why I care.
I wouldn’t mind being her age now,
If I could be in the past somehow.
If I got to live that way.
And wear her dresses,
In those days.
As I sit across from her on the train,

Admiring her wrinkles.

Poetic Breakdown of NYNOW 2016 Winter Show

To summarize and highlight the most popular and emerging trends seen at the 2016 NYNOW Winter Show, here’s a poetic breakdown. All you need to know from the Javits Center in New York City.
Scroll down for some attendee photos.

Frolicking around the show,
On my pink, fluffy flamingo.
I saw a strew of pineapples.
Many here.
Many there.
And throws of alpacas,
In textiles everywhere.
Amid the center of melted metal accents,
Burned a slew of candles in new advent.
Even the most basic molds,
looked stunning in shiny golds.
Rugs with signs of distress,
And tie dye patterns at their best.
Look out!
It’s NYNOW.

Listening to Lavender

image

Listening to lavender,
And the notes it sings.
Relieving my mind.
With delicate things.
The meadow’s rhythm goes on and on.
The end of the melody fades away into gone.
Listening to lavender,
How light the sound,
Of violins so tender.
Hugging me all around.
